Manual of Canine and Feline Thoracic Imaging

DESCRIPTION:

This manual is the second in the diagnostic imaging series. It begins by providing the reader with a grounding in the various imaging modalities: radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine and interventional radiological procedures.

The second section is devoted to the individual body systems and includes chapters dedicated to the heart and major vessels, the lungs, the mediastinum, the pleural space and the thoracic boundaries. To aid the reader with information retrieval, each anatomical region is approached in the following way: radiographic anatomy and variations; interpretive principles; and diseases. Information on diseases is further subdivided into sections covering radiographic findings and the results and interpretation of other imaging studies. Each of the chapters is accompanied by a wealth of images, demonstrating both the normal radiographic appearance of structures and the abnormalities associated with disease. Specially commissioned illustrations provide an extra dimension.

Manual of Canine and Feline Endocrinology

Description:
Since publication of the third edition in 2004 there have been important advances. Several endocrine disorders, such as feline acromegaly and hyperaldosteronism, have risen in importance. The use of diet and novel insulins in diabetic cats, and new drugs such as trilostane and methimazole, which were briefly mentioned in previous editions are now considered routine. In addition, the genetic risks associated with many disorders have been elucidated. • A new chapter presents the principles of interpreting endocrine test results and discusses how test performance is assessed in relation to diagnostic confidence. • The central section on glands and their diseases is presented in a standard format -- detailing physiology, aetiology, clinical features, diagnosis and treatment - to aid information retrieval. • The final section has been rewritten to focus on solving clinical and clinicopathological abnormalities with an endocrine dimension.

A case-based approach shows how the principles of clinical nutrition, pain management, physical rehabilitation and nursing care can be applied to these challenging patients.

Manual of Canine and Feline Gastroenterology 2nd Ed.

Book Overview

Building on the success of the previous edition, the BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Gastroenterology, 2nd edition incorporates not only the new information available since the original publication but also additional chapters on diagnostic techniques and presenting complaints.

Part 1 considers diagnostic techniques, with chapters on the approach to a gastrointestinal case, laboratory evaluation, imaging, endoscopy, immunology and biopsy. The completely new chapter on imaging of the gastrointestinal tract, liver and pancreas covers in detail the modalities most frequently employed in small animal practice, namely radiography and ultrasonography, whilst also briefly discussing more advanced techniques of Doppler and harmonic ultrasonography, scintigraphy, CR and MRI.

The short chapters in Part 2 provide a practical approach to investigating presenting complaints: dysphagia and regurgitation; vomiting; acute and chronic diarrhoea; malabsorption; GI haemorrhage; dyschezia and tenesmus; jaundice; hepatic encephalopathy and infectious diseases. All follow the same basic format: outlining the clinical features, ranking the differential diagnoses in order of importance, and providing step-by-step algorithms for diagnosis.

The more traditional organ-based systems approach in Part 3 has been expanded from the previous edition to include chapters on disorders of the oral cavity, perineum and anus, and biliary system. Each chapter is presented in a similar style, starting with a brief description of relevant anatomy and physiology, then detailing diagnostic tests, and concluding with a discussion of the disorders that can be encountered, including their treatment.

The completely new final part contains chapters devoted to critical care, assisted feeding techniques, and an overview of therapeutics

Interpreting ECGs with Confidence

Interpreting ECGs with Confidence:

Part 1 & Part2
By Barret Bulmer, DVM, MS, DACVIM (Cardiology) Tufts University
May 12, 2012
You have asked…How do I interpret ECGs with confidence?

The expert says…

Arrhythmias are clinically important because of their ability to compromise cardiac output and oxygen delivery to the body. The level of cardiac performance during an arrhythmia depends on rate, site of origin, and duration of the arrhythmia, as well as the presence of underlying cardiac or systemic diseases that may adversely affect the patient. Consequences of an arrhythmia may be clinically undetectable, produce signs of inadequate cardiac output (eg, weakness, fainting, shock), or lead to complete collapse of the circulatory system and sudden death.

The 4 general steps for ECG assessment include evaluation of heart rate, cardiac rhythm, mean electrical axis, and assessment for patterns of chamber enlargement. The following review assesses and interprets common canine and feline arrhythmias.

A systematic approach to interpreting ECGs will ensure an accurate diagnosis. The initial steps should include evaluating paper speed and sensitivity followed by labeling the individual waveforms recorded on the ECG. Afterward, the following questions should be addressed:

This is the first installment of a two-part series outlining ECG interpretation. Part 2 will address bradyarrhythmias and tachyarrhythmias.

STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES for STREET DOG BIRTH CONTROL PROGRAM

In 1994, amid studies that showed the killing of strays was ineffective in controlling population and decreasing the incidence of rabies, a new sterilization and vaccination program was born. This program is run by non-governmental animal welfare organizations in collaboration with municipal governments. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and other animal welfare organizations were nominated to help carry out the new rules of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960. Under the Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules of 2001, groups have been sent out to capture dogs in order to have them surgically spayed or neutered, vaccinated, then returned to their territory only. Each dog receives medical care, if necessary, prior to sterilization and stays in post operative care for 8 days. The Animal Welfare Board of India published the ‘Standard Operating Procedures  for Sterilization of Stray Dogs Under the Animal Birth Control Programme’ to help guide efforts.
Sterilization of the dogs has so far been successful in reducing the following overall:
  • migration and mating
  • territorial aggression that leads to dog fights/human injury
  • transmission of rabies to humans

For a limited time you can download this free ebook without stepping through any registration. First Look: Microsoft Office 2010, by Katherine Murray, offers 14 chapters of early content, organized like so:

Part I, “Envision the Possibilities,” introduces you to the changes in Office 2010 and shows you how you can make the most of the new features to fit the way you work today. Chapter 1, “Welcome to Office 2010,” gives you a play-by-play introduction to new features; Chapter 2, “Express Yourself Effectively and Efficiently,” details the great feature enhancements and visual effects throughout the applications; and Chapter 3, “Work Anywhere with Office 2010,” explores the flexibility factor by presenting a set of scenarios that enable users to complete their work no matter where their path takes them.

Part II, “Hit the Ground Running,” focuses on each of the Office 2010 applications in turn, spotlighting the key new features and showing how they relate to the whole. These chapters provide a how-to guide for many of the top features you’re likely to use right off the bat, and they offer inspiring ideas on how to get the most from your favorite applications.

Part III, “Next Steps with Office 2010,” zooms up to the big picture and provides examples to help you think through interoperability. How often do you use the various Office applications together? Customer research shows that people often don’t realize how well the applications work together as a complete system—which means they might be laboring over items they could easily incorporate from somewhere else. This part of the book provides examples for integrating the applications and explores Office 2010 security and training opportunities, as well.
